is a tradition that was brought with German immigrants to this country. On February 2, German farmers would observe the badgers as they emerged from their winter dens. If they saw their shadow, they would become frightened and run back into their dens for another nap thus indicating six more weeks of winter. If the badger did not see their shadow, it indicated confidence that the spring was just around the corner. This In Germany, they used a badger but since the early settlers didn't readily find badgers, groundhogs were adopted as the weather forecaster of choice.
