Cool Fowey Beaches for Hot Summer Getaways
The first thing which comes to your head when you think of England is endless rain and the cold. So when you think of summer vacations, it really is not the first place that would first go through your head. Spain, the South of France and the Mediterranean countries are the usual options because of the warm temperatures and always sunny climate.
But don’t disregard this historic European island nation completely. It has its share of great beaches too. Fowey, for instance, is a great destination if you are looking for beaches. This tiny fishing village located in the southern tip of Cornwall in England has been a famous trading port back in the middle ages. It is not the case today, true. But the ports once bustling with vendors and sellers are now great holiday spots during the summer too.
Below are some of the beaches in and around the town of Fowey which you should visit on your next vacation.
Whitehouse – Esplanade, Fowey with an O/S grid reference 123515
Here is a beach right inside the town of Fowey. It is great for families – even those with little children – because they have a shallow sea water pool so close to it. One would have to walk for five minutes from the car park to the main beach area but it really is worth all the trouble.

Readymoney Cove – the end of Fowey’s Esplanade with an O/S grid reference of 117511
This is the one most accessible from the center of town so it is great for local families doing ‘staycation’. The area is a great place for low tide rockpooling as well. Because it is so close, one would not have to worry about dining – there are numerous restaurants and pub in the area!
There are also some great places to stay in and around Readymoney Cove, including many great Fowey cottages, hotels and campsites. Do take note though that your dogs and other pets are allowed inside the cove only from the 1st October to Easter.
Par Sands – West of Fowey with an O/S grid references of 088533
This is one of the best family beaches in the area primarily because of its size. The parking space nearby is pretty wide too so you would not have any trouble finding one for your vehicle even during the weekends. Pubs, restaurants and other facilities for comfort (toilet and showers) are pretty close too.
Polkerris – West of Fowey with an O/S grid reference of 093521

This harbor beach located in neighboring town of Polkerris is also great for families. If you are more adventurous, this would be a better option than Par Sands because of the numerous water sports one could try out. The walk from the parking lot to the beach spot is pretty short at only three minutes.
Polridmouth Cove – West of Fowey, below Menabilly with an O/S grid reference of 102503
This is one of those romantic coves that can be accessed by foot or by boat. If you do choose the latter, be careful as there are numerous sandbanks in the area. However, this is not a great spot for those with disabilities (especially those in wheelchairs) or those who do not like to walk distances. It’s a 15-minute walk from the parking area to the beach, for instance. And they do not have toilet facilities here.
Those mentioned above are just five of the beaches found in and around the picturesque town of Fowey. There’s Polruan Quay, Lantic Bay, and Lansallos Beach.
It is alright to just choose one or two beach spots to visit during your vacation. But so many suggest that it’s best to go from the one located in one end of the estuary and then go through all of it while on a boat to reach the other end of the estuary.
